Resulting from the SSRF Phase II Upgrade project, the BDSC is one of the SSRF latest upgrades, which turned the SSRF into the first Superfacility in China, and one of the first worldwide. With its state-of-the-art developments the BDSC aims to dramatically accelerate and automate the multidisciplinary research of all the users at the SSRF, thus effectively increasing the rate of their scientific discoveries and the resulting technological advancements, with a clear societal impact. Therefore, with its AI-SSRF-SP, the BDSC targets the research projects that several national and international universities, academies, research institutes and industries are pursuing at SSRF, where massive support in terms of scientific computation is required in order to enable the most complete knowledge transfer from scientific research to industrial developments for real world applications, while elastically scaling out their workload on the top Chinese National Supercomputers. Furthermore, the BDSC is engaged in supporting China achieving all the scientific national strategic and key targets. |

![]() | With its AI-SSRF-SP, the BDSC does allow all its users to fully exploit the scientific and technological potential of the SSRF for their research, enabling real-time unmanned multimodal experiments, while sharing its successful model with the other multidisciplinary large facilities in China and worldwide (including Synchrotron, Neutron, X-ray Free Electron Laser etc.). To enable this, the BDSC has designed and deployed the state-of-the-art Big Data science and technologies, AI, IoT, real-time unstaffed and remotely controlled experiments, robotic automation, HPC, cloud/edge supercomputing and massive parallelisation, hosted within a fully centralized and user-centric platform, which accelerated the users’ multidisciplinary science carried out at SSRF by several orders of magnitude. |
The AI-SSRF-SP is, in fact, collecting, tagging and tracking petabytes of scientific data and metadata from all the experiments at SSRF, to be then ingested by neural networks for Machine Learning (ML), in order to fully automate the entire large facility lifecycle. This outstanding scientific and technological achievement also allows non-expert users at the SSRF to obtain scientifically meaningful results in real-time, instead of spending months, after returning to their home institutions, processing unstructured raw data. The BDSC is thus effectively extending the use of large national scientific facilities to the largest plethora of scientific and industrial disciplines ever, dramatically increasing the scientific and technological productivity of the SSRF, shifting the focus of the SSRF users from data to science.
The BDSC further aims at seeding the Chinese National Scientific Grid based on the platform model being developed at the BDSC. | |
